Pardon me for bringing in a tweet from the former VU Hoops contributor and lately professional malcontent troll for this site’s parent company, to illustrate the past seven years of Villanova basketball. What that tweet doesn’t illustrate as it waits patiently under the bridge with its friends, is the fact that if you go back a full decade — even stretch it to just 2009 — you see a different story: two Final Four runs, four Big East regular season titles, two Big East Tournament titles, and for Jay Wright especially, a plethora of coaching accolades and awards.

This article isn’t about rehashing yesterday’s game -- there has been, and will be, plenty of that to go around. Instead this is a time to discuss Jay Wright’s career at Villanova and why, despite the pain and disappointment, Villanova fans need to trust the process.

The Wildcats’ head coach has turned things around tremendously at Villanova since hitting the skids in the 2011-12 season with a 13-19 record and no appearance in the postseason. His teams have made it to the NCAA tournament every other year in his tenure since 2005, and have made it to the Sweet 16 (2005; 2008), Elite Eight (2006), Final Four (2009), and won it all (2016).

Forget even that.

Jay Wright’s teams wins games in bunches, and often against the odds. While Daniel Ochefu gave the ‘Cats a great presence in the post last season, it was often without an imposing big man that Wright’s ‘Cats won 25-35 games in a season.

His legacy at Villanova is entirely uncomplicated — he is arguably the best coach in school history at this point in his career. While national media will largely compare him to Coach K and other great coaches at schools that are uniquely unlike Villanova, let’s instead compare him to the other men who have coached the Wildcats.

Wright has won 386 games while on the Main Line, which is a figure eclipsed only by the great Al Severance (413 wins). It took Severance 25 seasons to reach that point, and while it isn’t comparing apples-to-apples (Wright has had a few more games per season to work with), it is notable that the current head coach is creeping up on that number after just 16 seasons.

A better head-to-head though may be the various Wildcat coaches’ winning percentages though. Here’s how they stand:

Wright is surpassed only by Jack Kraft, who won a larger percentage of his games, but over a shorter tenure (12 seasons) and fewer games. Winning over 70% of your games over a long period of time is an immensely difficult task. One that even Wright’s mentor, Rollie Massimino, could not sniff at.

While winning percentage is a good indicator, fans often look to the accolades and hardware for proof. Jay Wright, again, in the clubhouse leader in that category.

While three of his predecessors have taken the ‘Cats to the Final Four (Al Severance only needed to win one game to do it in the 30’s), and two to the title game, none of them ever made a repeat trip to the elite final weekend of the tournament. Jay Wright’s trips in 2009 and 2016 put him in relatively rarefied air for a Wildcats coach. He’s also one of only two ‘Nova coaches to bring home a national title, one of only two to bring home a Big East tournament title — and the only coach to win hardware twice at Madison Square Garden.

For all the petty criticisms that have been launched at Wright, both here and through other venues, over the last decade-plus, the biggest metric is undeniable — Jay Wright’s teams win, a lot. They do it without a cast of multiple McDonald’s All-Americans (though sometimes they have one), and they do it without a roster full of players who will leave school early to go pro.

Wright has a system that works for Villanova — and in the face of a disappointing end to the 2016 Title defense, it is important that fans trust it.

The ‘Cats entered this tournament as the top seed, despite never having their prized recruit Omari Spellman on hand, and missing out on the 2016 title game’s overlooked hero, Phil Booth. They overachieved. It isn’t clear that any other coach in the country could have done more with Villanova’s roster. Wright didn’t fill his team with shooting stars, he loaded it with Villanova basketball players; kids who came to school for the right reasons and who are willing to play a now-proven brand of basketball.

That system will ultimately win the ‘Cats a lot of games, but this isn’t a school that will likely ever out-talent everyone in the nation. It isn’t a school — with its outsize emphasis on graduation rates and being one of the top performers in the NCAA’s APR rating — that will likely ever field a roster of future NBA stars. All of that is perfectly okay, because Wright’s system really is a great fit for this school, and proves that a program can be run successfully with those imperatives.

In the single-elimination world of the NCAA tournament, sometimes a bad game or tough match-up will cause disappointment for an otherwise good team. Villanova was a good team.

Jay Wright is a great coach.

Lest you forgot the dominance this program is currently exuding in the sport.

You’re going to read a lot of negatives about the Villanova Wildcats basketball program over the next 24-48 hours. This post won’t be one of them.

People like to frame things in different ways. Most often, they like to frame it to fit the narrative du jour. So you’re going to read that Villanova has lost in the second round three of the past four years. That Villanova was “lucky” in 2016. That Jay Wright can’t coach the big game. That Villanova doesn’t have the NBA starpower or athletes to win the big game.

You’re not going to read about how Villanova has won more games than any other program in the last four years. Why? Maybe writers are lazy. Maybe the ‘Villanova stinks’ narrative brings page views and clicks. I really can’t answer that for you.

Maybe, just maybe, Villanova’s timing has just been insanely poor? Maybe some of those thrilling late-game wins they’ve pulled out in the regular season would have been better served being traded with the heart-breaking losses in the NCAA Tournament on the calendar. We’d all trade the Virginia finish for the Wisconsin finish without a second thought.

The kicker? We know too well that March is fickle, and so much depends on matchups. The selection cronies have not been kind to the ‘Cats. How’s this for Villanova’s “luck of the draw” under Jay Wright:

2017: Lost in second round to Wisconsin, grossly underseeded by consensus

Jay Wright has gone out to the National Champion in 5 of his 11 years in the dance (not including this one, his 12th) as the head coach at Villanova. That’s f*cking stupid, but most will call it a coincidence. He won’t make the excuses, but I’ll make them for him, because he’s a damn good coach. That’s just bad luck.

Moreover, define “success” in March for me. Xavier’s made seven Sweet 16s in twelve years. That’s consistent, for sure. But would you rather have that or would you rather have the National Championship, 2 Final Fours, 3 Elite Eights, 5 Sweet Sixteens and 5 Big East Championships that ‘Nova has accumulated in the same time frame?

Villanova has still won more games than any other program during the last 4 years. They’ve tyrannized the Big East over the same window. And yes, their season has ended earlier than expected in three of those four seasons.

The main point I’m trying to make is that Villanova is headed to the elite of college basketball, if they aren’t already there. Where we’re going <s>we don’t need roads</s> it’s about winning Big East Championships and National Championships.

The blue-bloods don’t care about anything other than titles. In 4 years, this team has won 7 titles. That’s damn good. Be proud. More banners are on the way.

You cheer for the Villanova Wildcats, who have been among the absolute best in college basketball for the past four seasons. Count yourself among the blessed that you have it in your lives. This isn’t Kings College or some no-name institution that doesn’t win anything of relevance. This is big-time sport.

Enjoy what we have, for as long as it lasts.

‘Cats crash out of the tourney in the second round.

Villanova’s quest to repeat as National Champions came to an end on Saturday as the top-seed Wildcats lost to Wisconsin, 65-62, in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament. The victory in a back and forth game will send the Badgers to New York City for the Sweet 16.

Wisconsin controlled much of the first half playing without star sophomore Ethan Happ who was battling foul trouble. The Badgers who took a four-point lead into the intermission saw a new Wildcat squad in the second half.

‘Nova, who finishes the season with a 34-4 record, attacked the rim quickly entering the game after the half to even the score at 37 just five minutes in.

Between the heroic efforts of Josh Hart and Donte DiVincenzo, who scored 19 and 15 respectively, the Wildcats grabbed the lead at the 12:50 mark. Nova’s lead increased to seven after DiVincenzo’s 3-pointer gave the ‘Cats a 57-50 lead with 5:30 to play.

However, the Badgers closed the game out on a 15-5 run with Nigel Hayes, who led Wisconsin with 19, hitting a baseline shot to put the red team up 64-26 with 11.4 seconds to play.

Super Senior, Player of the Year candidate, Josh Hart was unable to even the score on Villanova’s final possession against the Big Ten’s second-best team.

Hart, Kris Jenkins, and Darryl Reynolds end their Wildcat career as the winningest class in the University’s history. A career that saw them win four Big 5 titles, four BIG EAST Regular Season Championships, two BIG EAST Tournament Championships and the 2016 National Championship.

Both teams are very experienced when it comes to postseason success, but have taken different paths to get here.

Villanova romped through the regular season but struggled initially before putting Mount St. Mary’s away on Thursday night. The Badgers won an offensive showcase over Virginia Tech in a game where Bronson Koenig seemed to rediscover his shooting stroke.

This feels like a game that should be taking place later in March Madness, but we’re in for a treat in the early rounds instead.

Game Time, TV Schedule: ~2:40pm ET following conclusion of Notre Dame-West Virginia. The game will be televised on CBS.
