After three weeks and thousands of votes cast, the #2 Seeded Maryland: DC Suburbs team have been crowned the Champions of our VU Hoops 2019 Summer Tournament.
Yesterday, Howard Porter and the boys from the South East won their 3rd Place game over the All-Stars of West Philly. Today, after a full month and thousands of votes cast, we’re down to the final two Hometown Teams in our VU Hoops 2019 Summer Tournament. Not surprisingly, our finalists come from two of Jay Wright’s recruiting hotbeds: New York City and Washington, D.C.

These two teams represent some of the greatest eras in Villanova Basketball history. For the Bronx team, you have Ed Pinckney, Final Four Most Outstanding Player on Villanova’s first ever Championship team. Allan Ray is one of only eight Villanova players to score over 2,000 career points, and the only player other than Scottie Reynolds to do so under Jay Wright. And Corey Fisher was one of the highest rated recruits in school history, and the starting point guard for the team’s 2009 Final Four run.

On the other side, you of course have Josh Hart, the 5th consensus AP First-Team All-American in school history and the 10th leading scorer at Villanova All-Time. He’s joined by Dante Cunningham, the leading scorer from the 2009 Final Four run. And who can forget Kris Jenkins, who hit the greatest shot in college basketball history to win the 2016 National Championship.

Both of these teams have strong supporting casts, but only one can come away as our new Summer Tournament Champion. Who will it be? That’s up to you Nova Nation!

We’ve reached the Final Four. Two #1 seeds and two #2 seeds have advanced to our final week of the tournament. All of the hotbed recruiting areas are covered: Philly, New York, DC...
The #1 overall seed West Philly has won their region, but can they continue their dominant run to the summer tournament crown? Now onto today’s voting!

Round one concluded with the first considerable upset in the tournament. #6 New York State & Ohio was able to take down #3 Long Island, and is now the lowest seed to make the Sweet 16. The rest of the Severance Region went chalk as #1 Washington DC, #2 The Bronx, and #4 Northwest Philadelphia all advance. And just like that, the Sweet 16 is set.

That brings us to today’s voting and the first half of the Sweet 16. We’re starting with the top half of the bracket and the Wright and Massimino Regions. These teams may have blown out the competition in the first round, but now things are going to get much tougher for the voters. Let’s get to it!

Wright Region

#1 West Philadelphia: West & West Catholic vs #5 North Philly Suburbs

We kick things off with the biggest matchup of the day. On one side we have the tournament’s #1 overall seed, featuring multiple members of the Villanova Athletics Hall of Fame. But on the other side we have the “King of Summer” Ryan Arcidiacono alongside three current Wildcats. Will Arch’s quest for a 4-peat continue, or will West Philly’s All-Stars have simply too much talent to overcome. You decide!

#2 Massachusetts & Maine vs #3 Central Jersey West

These teams each have their own fearsome foursome to lead their squad. On the M&M team, McClain, Plansky, Bradley, and Samuels represent some of the best New England has to offer. But don’t count out Trenton and Pennsauken, as Melchionni, Olive, Wolf, and Allen aren’t just going to be pushed aside.

Massimino Region

#1 South East USA vs #4 Connecticut & Rhode Island

It’s Northeast vs Southeast in our first match in the Massimino Region. The boys of Florida (Porter, Jones, and Bell) have an advantage in seeding, but Connecticut & Rhode Island’s Pinone, Pressley, and Jensen have the Championship pedigree to pull an upset.

#2 North Philadelphia vs #3 Brooklyn

It’s Philly vs New York in our final matchup of the day. Lowry, Lawson, Raiken, and Haynes bring the toughness that North Philly is known for. That said, it’s pretty hard to out-tough the Brooklyn group of Sumpter, Pinkston, Granger, and Pena. Get ready for a grind-it-out battle between these two.

Now onto today’s voting!

I know many of us thought Josh Hart’s team could be dominant, but in yesterday’s match they got 123 of 124 votes. The #2 Maryland: DC Suburbs team will be joined in the Sweet 16 by #1 Central Philadelphia, #5 South & Central USA, and #3 West Philadelphia.

We close out the first round with the Severance Region, where two of the eight teams had to advance through the Play-In round. We’ll see if either of them can pull off big upsets to continue on with the final spots in the Sweet 16.

Severance Region

#1 Washington DC vs #8 Western Pennsylvania

The Washington DC team has some notable players in George Raveling and George Leftwich, but the real draw are the three Herron brothers. Middle brother Keith finished his Villanova career as the school’s leading scorer, and now sits 3rd on the all-time list. Western PA features Villanova’s 5th all-time leading scorer in Doug West, and already have a win under their belts from the Play-In round.

#4 Northwest Philadelphia vs #5 North Jersey: NYC Suburbs

The Northwest Philly team spans the ages, including Paul Arizin, Alvin Williams, Chubby Cox, and fan favorite Darryl Reynolds. They’ll face a talented squad from North Jersey that includes Tom Sienkiewicz, Kenny Wilson, and Corey Stokes.

#3 Long Island vs #6 New York State & Ohio

The Long Island team is full of Champions. Tom G. Brennan averaged a double-double for his career, while other fan favorites include Jason Fraser, Gary McLain, Patrick Farrell, and Chuck Everson. They’ll face a team comprised of Ohio and all the non-NYC parts of New York. That team features the trio of Omari Spellman, Eric Eberz, and Greg Woodard.

#2 The Bronx vs #7 Baltimore & Northern Maryland

The Bronx features an amazing trio of Ed Pinckney, Allen Ray, and Corey Fisher. Add in other fan favorites like Gary Massey, and it’s easy to see how this team will be tough to take down. But an early upset could be in the works, as Phil Booth and Daniel Ochefu’s Baltimore team look to continue building on their Play-In victory.
