College basketball rosters can carry up to 13 players on scholarship. Jay Wright's history of roster management for the Villanova Wildcats shows a predilection for not using that full amount with the thinking that a shorter bench is better for the rotation and locker room spirits.
Must Reads
In 2015-16, Wright will use all 13 of the team's scholarships (including Eric Paschall who will be a transfer redshirt). Mike Sheridan has confirmed that seniors Henry Lowe and Patrick Farrell are on scholarship for the upcoming season.
The act is one of appreciation by Wright to his preferred walk-ons for their thankless sacrifices over the past three years.
The strength of the "bench mob" isn't obvious to the average fan, but the pair, along with Kevin Rafferty, will have valuable roles next season as strong locker room presences and leaders in practice. All three players will push the starters in practice, forcing the rotation players to improve their game. On the sidelines, Lowe, Farrell, and Rafferty will do all they can to encourage the players and infuse energy into the players and the crowd.
It's another class move by Coach Wright to reward those who dedicate their time with the program.
