Loyola-Maryland needs a new head coach following the resignation of G.G. Smith, and they may be targeting Villanova Wildcats assistant Ashley Howard.
Hearing Ashley Howard (Villanova), Jay Young (Rutgers), Luke Murray (Xavier) and Billy Donlon (Northwestern) are among those getting a serious look from Loyola Maryland for the open head coaching position.— Brian Snow (@BSnow247) March 19, 2018
Howard has been in the coaching ranks for over 15 years, paying his dues and learning his craft a La Salle (his alma mater), Drexel and Xavier in addition to his 5 years at Villanova.
Howard has been a rockstar since joining the Villanova staff (from Xavier of all places!) in the summer of 2013. He’s got a great reputation among the players, and he’s an excellent recruiter to boot.
After losing Baker Dunleavy to Quinnipiac last year, losing Howard this offseason would be a tough blow to the Wildcats’ staff. But when you are the ranking assistant on the most successful program in the country, you’re going to be high on the list of mid-major job openings.
Loyola-Maryland went 9-22 (#322 at KenPom) this year and had been trending down under Smith’s watch. They’re also in the Patriot League, a tough place to recruit.
Something to keep an eye on for now, and if this doesn’t come to fruition I don’t expect it will be the last time we see Howard linked with a job opening.
