Villanova wins outright Big East Championship for 5th time in 6 years

This one was a little different!

NCAA Basketball: Villanova at Seton Hall Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

Despite suffering a loss on the road earlier on Saturday to Seton Hall, the Villanova Wildcats are once again the Big East regular season champions following Georgetown’s stunning upset at Marquette.

Villanova finished atop the Big East standings at 13-5 in conference play, and has locked down the #1 seed for next week’s Big East Tournament in the process. They will play Wednesday’s 8-9 winner on Thursday at 12pm ET.

The rest of the Big East standings are still in flux, so we won’t know that 8-9 matchup until Xavier-St. John’s and DePaul-Creighton are finished playing. As of the Xavier win, Providence is locked into either the 8 or 9 spot, with the winner of DePaul-Creighton joining them.

It’s been a rocky season for Jay Wright and his team, but credit where credit is due - they will hang another banner and bring home another trophy in 2019. That’s always fun! And they’ve put themselves in the best possible position for the Big East Tournament next week, and for NCAA Tournament seeding purposes as well.

See you in New York City!
