Villanova announced that defensive back Nowoola Awopetu has signed his letter of intent this morning. The Staten Islander announced his decision a few weeks ago on January 17th. He also had an offer from Staten Island-based Wagner, but chose to head south toward Philadelphia for college.
At 5'11" and 185 pounds, Awopetu seems like a likely fit to compete at corner for Villanova, but the versatile scheme at Villanova could see him sliding over to safety as well. In high school he split his time between cornerback and wide receiver. He's also notably related to former Houston Texans defensive end Adewale Ogunleye.
Depth Chart (* denotes walk-on)
Class | Name | Height | Weight |
---|---|---|---|
(RS) Junior | Trey Johnson | 5'11" | 175 lbs. |
Junior | Malik Reaves | 6'0" | 200 lbs. |
Senior | Jason Ceneus | 5'9" | 175 lbs. |
Senior | C.J. Logan | 5'11" | 205 lbs. |
With Villanova's 3-3-5 defensive scheme, Awopetu could have an opportunity to earn some reps early on, even if the key starting positions are likely wrapped up by veterans. Most of Villanova's key defensive backfield players saw some action in their first or second season on the Main Line.
Welcome Nowoola to 'Nova Nation!
